How much does website hosting cost in Australia?

A hosting plan is only one line in the budget. The useful number is the full renewal-year cost of keeping the website, domain, email, backups and software working.

Updated 26 October 2026 · Prices change frequently, so use this as a budgeting method rather than a provider quote.

Quick answer: compare the amount you will pay in the second and third years, not the largest introductory discount. Include GST, currency conversion, domain renewal, mailboxes, backup retention and any maintenance work.

What belongs in a real hosting budget?

CostWhat to checkCommon surprise
Hosting planRenewal rate, billing term, GST and billing currencyThe advertised monthly figure may require several years paid upfront.
Domain nameAnnual renewal and who controls the registrar accountA free first year can become a separate renewal later.
Business emailNumber of mailboxes, storage and spam filteringWeb hosting and email hosting are not always the same product.
BackupsFrequency, retention, off-site storage and restore feesA backup is not useful until a restore has been tested.
Security and softwareSSL, malware response, premium themes and plugins“Managed” can still exclude site repairs and plugin licences.
MaintenanceUpdates, monitoring, content changes and technical supportCheap infrastructure can still require paid technical time.

Introductory price versus renewal price

A first-term promotion can be useful, but it is not the cost of ownership. Write down the checkout total, the length of the prepaid term and the ordinary renewal total. Divide each total by the number of months it covers. Then compare providers over the same period.

Also check whether the amount is displayed in AUD or another currency, whether GST is included and whether optional products were preselected. If cancellation requires a manual step, add the renewal date to your calendar.

Shared, managed and cloud hosting costs are not directly comparable

Shared hosting normally provides the lowest infrastructure price and can suit a brochure website with modest traffic. Managed WordPress hosting usually charges more because it may include platform-specific caching, staging, backups, security controls or specialist support. Cloud servers provide more control but can shift setup, monitoring and recovery work back to the customer.

The cheapest sensible option is the lowest-cost service that meets the website's recovery, support and performance needs. A small brochure site and a revenue-producing WooCommerce store should not use the same risk budget.

Questions to ask before paying

  • What is the exact renewal price after the initial term?
  • Is the quoted amount in AUD and does it include GST?
  • Where can the site be hosted, and can its location be changed later?
  • Are email mailboxes included, optional or unavailable?
  • How often are backups created, how long are they kept and who can restore them?
  • Is migration included, and does it include DNS and email?
  • What happens if the site is hacked or an update breaks it?
  • Can you download a complete copy of the files and database before cancelling?

How to compare two quotes fairly

  1. Convert every item to an annual AUD amount.
  2. Use renewal pricing, not only the first invoice.
  3. Add equivalent email, backups, security and maintenance.
  4. Record any one-off migration or setup fee separately.
  5. Compare what happens during a failure: who restores the site, from which backup, and at what cost?

The Australian Government describes hosting as the service that stores a website on an internet-connected server and recommends choosing features, resources and support that match the business. The Australian Signals Directorate also recommends regular website backups and software updates. Those are operational requirements, not optional extras.
