WordPress hosting comparison checklist
| Area | Evidence to request | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Migration | What is copied, tested and corrected? | “Free migration” may exclude email, DNS or complex sites. |
| Backups | Frequency, retention, off-site copy and restore process | Short retention can preserve a compromised copy but not a clean one. |
| Staging | Separate test site and selective/full deployment | A full push can overwrite live orders or form entries. |
| Performance | Server location, caching, resource limits and test method | Visitor limits are often estimates, not guaranteed capacity. |
| Support | WordPress scope, escalation path and response records | Support may stop at proving the server is online. |
| Security | MFA, updates, isolation, malware process and SSL | Malware scanning and malware removal are different services. |
Shared WordPress hosting or managed WordPress?
Shared WordPress hosting often combines a standard hosting account with an installer, caching defaults and automatic updates. It can be good value when the site is simple or an experienced person manages it.
Managed WordPress hosting usually narrows the platform and adds operational tooling such as staging, platform backups, caching and specialist support. The label is not standardised, so compare the actual responsibilities. Ask who updates plugins, who diagnoses a failed update, who restores the site and whether those tasks cost extra.
Australian location and audience
If most visitors are in Australia, include a nearby origin or effective CDN strategy in testing. Confirm the location available on the exact plan. A global brand's Australian sales page does not prove every product uses an Australian data centre. For an international audience, a CDN and well-cached site may matter more than a single origin location.
How we will assess providers
- Create an equivalent WordPress test site and document the plan and region.
- Measure repeated page and server response behaviour rather than one best result.
- Test backup creation and restore, staging and SSL.
- Ask support the same practical questions and record scope and clarity.
- Calculate first-term and renewal-year costs with required extras.
- Document migration and cancellation portability.
Until those steps are complete, provider pages are labelled as long-term experience, structured testing or researched information. This avoids presenting a feature list as a test result.
Who should prioritise what?
New brochure website
Prioritise ease of setup, renewal cost, backups and support. Large traffic allowances are less useful than a straightforward recovery path.
Existing business site
Prioritise migration quality, staging, current PHP support and the ability to restore without waiting for a ticket.
WooCommerce or membership site
Prioritise database performance, frequent restore points, safe staging workflows, monitoring and an escalation path. Plan the hosting decision around the value and rate of transactions.
Questions to ask before checkout
- Is the price in AUD, and what is the exact renewal total?
- Which data-centre location applies to this plan?
- Can I restore my own backup, and how far back can I go?
- Does staging protect new orders and form submissions?
- Which WordPress problems will support investigate?
- Can I download a full files-and-database backup when leaving?
